Walled City Rejects Murree Beautification Project, Suggests Facade Restoration Instead of Demolition

BY: Qasim Nawaz Abbasi

MURREE : The Walled City Lahore Authority (WCLA) has rejected a beautification project proposed by the Punjab government for Murree’s iconic Mall Road. The project initially aimed to enhance the area’s natural beauty by invoking Section 4, which would entail demolishing buildings and shops within a 500-meter radius on both sides of the Mall Road to create green spaces and facilitate tree plantations.

However, following an inspection by a team from WCLA, the plan was deemed unfeasible. According to a source in the Walled City who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the team concluded that the proposal could disrupt local businesses and may fall short of delivering the anticipated aesthetic improvements.

Instead of large-scale demolition, the WCLA has recommended a more conservative approach: restoring the existing buildings along Mall Road to align with the historical architectural style of the old Mall. This alternative, they argue, would preserve the traditional character of the area while supporting the current business ecosystem.

The Punjab Chief Minister is expected to receive a formal briefing on the team’s findings and recommendations next week, according to sources.
