MELBOURNE: In a thrilling showdown, Hamza Khan of Pakistan secured victory at the World Junior Squash Championship in Melbourne, defeating Egypt’s Mohamed Zakaria in a spectacular final match with a scoreline of 10-12, 14-12, 11-3, and 11-6.

Despite facing an initial setback with a loss in the first game, Hamza displayed remarkable resilience and made a grand comeback, securing three consecutive wins to clinch the championship title.

Notably, Hamza’s triumph marks a historic moment for Pakistan, as he becomes the first player from the nation to claim this prestigious title since Jansher Khan’s victory 37 years ago.

The final was an intense affair, with Zakaria taking the opening game 12-10 in a gripping 26-minute battle. However, the tide turned in the second game, where Hamza rallied from an 8-10 deficit, denying Zakaria game points twice, and eventually leveling the match with a 14-12 win.

The following two games showcased Hamza’s dominance, as he secured a swift 11-3 victory in the third game, followed by an 11-6 win in the fourth, leaving no room for doubt in his championship-winning performance.

Hamza’s journey to the final was no less impressive. In the semi-finals, he overcame the resilient challenge from French player Melvil Scianimanico, prevailing in a thrilling decider with a scoreline of 11-8, 11-4, 10-12, 9-11, and 13-11.

Throughout the tournament, Hamza exhibited exceptional skill and determination, making history by becoming the first Pakistani player to reach the World Junior Squash Championship final since Aamir Atlas in 2008.

His path to victory was paved with outstanding performances, including a hard-fought quarter-final win against Malaysia’s Joachim Chuah with a score of 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, and 12-10.

In earlier rounds, Hamza displayed his prowess by triumphing over formidable opponents, defeating Colombia’s Santamaria in a closely contested pre-quarter-final and prevailing against Netherlands’ Samuel Grates in the round of 16 with a commanding scoreline of 12-10, 11-6, 11-3, and 11-7.

Hamza Khan’s remarkable achievement has not only brought glory to Pakistan but also showcased his immense talent and potential on the international squash stage. His victory will undoubtedly inspire and motivate young players around the world.
