By: Our Correspondent

ISLAMABAD: Members of the Islamabad bar held a meeting with a UK-based Electronic Voting Machine – EVM manufacturing company and showed interest to conduct the upcoming election of the Islamabad bar digitally.

In the meeting, members of the Islamabad bar discussed the significance of building a competitive, digital election system in Bar Councils. The meeting was organized by Advocate Sikander Nawaz Abbasi which was attended by elected members of Islamabad Bar Council including Mr. Aleem Abbasi, Mr. Zulfiqar Abbasi and Mr. Qazi Adil. President of Islamabad High Court Bar, Mr. Zahid Raja and President District Bar Council, Mr. Farid Kaif also graced the occasion with their presence. Special corespondent for judicial proceedings in Islamabad High Court (Dunya News) Mr. Amir Saeed was also present in the meeting.

The attendees weighed upon the importance of incorporating a digital system for elections in Bar Councils, to eliminate the loopholes in the electoral process. For this purpose, a Uk-based company has been engaged which possesses a deep understanding of political, legal, logistical, public and other challenges faced during elections. The stakeholders agreed upon the eminence of technology and how it can markedly improve the whole election system. With this breakthrough, Bar Councils will ensure a simple and secure voting system as well as speedy results and reporting. This initiative is also in line with the Government of Pakistan’s future policy of digitalizing the voting system for future general elections. ECP has already used the system for two election pilots with electronic voting machines in 2017.
