KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notices to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on a petition filed by Dr. Sarah Gill, Pakistan’s first transgender doctor, regarding the non-issuance of her medical registration and license.
Dr. Gill completed her MBBS in 2021 from Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC), which has since been upgraded to a university. The college, earlier affiliated with the University of Karachi, informed the court that it no longer has access to the PMDC’s online portal due to the institution’s change in status.
As a result, Dr. Gill’s credentials remain pending for verification, preventing her from obtaining the medical license required to practice in Pakistan. The petition maintained that the dispute between the upgraded university and PMDC has unfairly obstructed her professional career.
Taking notice of the matter, the SHC directed the PMDC and other relevant parties to submit their replies by November 7. The case highlights not only bureaucratic inefficiencies but also the systemic challenges faced by transgender professionals seeking equal recognition within Pakistan’s medical sector.
