PM should show flexibility amid extreme polarization

By: Asem Mustafa Awan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appealed for sanity in politics asking political stalwarts and institutions to play their due role so that Pakistan could achieve its lost glory in the comity of nations.

He expressed these views at a flour distribution point in Islamabad for the needy. The hotch-potch mechanism at the distribution place has so far taken a few lives as during the melee many people get trampled.

This ever-increasing political rift is raising alarms and a commoner is greatly perturbed as the political statements have now been replaced with death threats and personal enmity.

It has been months now as the nation amid political chaos looks for a solution that is nowhere in sight and the divide increases.

Prime Minister and associates namely Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) over the months have a one point agenda that will end the political turmoil and that is ‘minus Imran Khan’.

It is pertinent to note that Imran Khan after leaving the office owing to ‘regime change’ has made its political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf as the most popular organization and his graph as a national leader is touching skies.

The week before with letter from President and reply from Prime Minister clearly depicts that society as a whole is getting polarized at an alarming rate. President initiative must be appreciated but the reply from Prime Minister office left a lot to be desired.

The public on the whole and its welfare especially the arrests of the political workers are some of the few points that needs consideration.

Politics over all reflect the existing trends in the society and people exercise their choices and have their own intellectual preferences.

Pakistan on the contrary like developed societies have parties that tends to promote hereditary politics contrary to their claim of being democratic resulting them and their protégés above the state.

Pakistan Muslim Leage (Nawaz), Pakistan People Party (PPP), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F), Awami National Party are to name a few while the PML and PPP have been at helms of affairs controlling the state resources.

The two represented extreme right and left ideologies though the differences between them started reducing after the assassination of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2006. The emergence of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf at the national front was viewed as an alternative force and Imran Khan’s struggle over the years have now seeped into masses.

All politicians understand society and politics of Pakistan very well and PM is viewed to have a flexible attitude in the party and as PM this should benefit the entire country.

He is well aware of the chaos gripping Pakistan besides global attention, minus Imran Khan can increase and aggravate the situation besides negative publicity.

A grand dialogue involving the representation of all parties and institutions instead of minimizing an opponent can steer the nation out of political chaos.

A clear national agenda should be presented and all should join hand and work together to take Pakistan to new height which it really deserves.
