Role of Emotional Intelligence in our lives

By: Shahid Javed Malik

Have you come across the term “EQ” before? The term “mental intelligence quotient” is an acronym for “emotional intelligence quotient.” Although EQ is crucial for participating actively in society, it is not explicitly taught in educational courses. What is EQ exactly? And why do you require it for daily tasks or work?

What makes EQ and IQ different from one another?

Controlling one’s emotions is known as emotional intelligence (EI), and its greatest potential lies in understanding it and knowing how to best apply it. Making better decisions, handling challenging situations, and maintaining a more stable social life can all be aided by having high emotional intelligence.

EQ is a method of seeing the world and interacting with others that will help you creates a better life for yourself.

Family and friendship interactions require EQ, but it becomes even more crucial when you join society and interact professionally with coworkers, superiors, clients, affiliates, and others.

We read many formulas in life at school level but hardly implement any of the formula in real life, but there is a formula “Event + response = outcome” is implemented throughout the life probably it is implemented every day. If you control your emotions & know how to react in any event, your response at that particular moment is directly proportional to the outcome.

EQ is the capacity to:

• Motivate one and persevere in the face of obstacles;

 • Repress impulses and tolerate pleasure;

• Control one’s mood and prevent emotional disturbances from impairing one’s ability to think.

• The capacity to feel others’ pain and hold out hope

How is it different from IQ

The term “Intelligence Quotient” is referred to by the acronym “IQ.”

Your IQ increases with your capacity for information processing and problem-solving.

Many of us must have taken an IQ test as kids to determine our level of intelligence.

IQ and EQ are two distinct concepts, and having a high IQ does not guarantee success in life.

It is believed that EQ is necessary to maximise IQ and lead a fulfilling life.

It is thought that while EQ can be developed, IQ is somewhat dictated by innate factors. Don’t be concerned if you believe that your EQ may be poor as you reflect on your life. Your EQ still has room for growth.

Can EQ be measured?

There are numerous ways to measure anything; some involve asking a few questions and others involve watching behavior. Since EQ is a relatively new idea, many academics are still researching it and have not determined the most accurate method of measurement.

Having stated that, some of you might be pondering your level of EQ. Please visit a website that offers free diagnoses in exchange for answering questions if you conduct an Internet search.

It is true that the higher your IQ, the more likely you are to be successful at work. This is because even if it is an inexperienced job, you can grasp the situation with your own head, think about what you should do, and act accordingly.

Communication with customers and cooperation with colleagues are the only things that can be established.

If you consider club activities in the context of student life, you can comprehend. Regardless of how intelligent you are, have you ever had a disagreement with someone who acts selfishly without regard for their peers or who becomes irate when their thoughts are ignored?

Does EQ matter in IT / Technical jobs?

The value of EQ in positions that need extensive communication, like sales and marketing, is clear.

On the other hand, aren’t “technical jobs” like research, engineering, and data science EQ-required? I think my EQ is low, so maybe I should pursue a technical career? If you believe that, you ought to reconsider.

Communication is a major component of many technical careers. Aligning the recognition with people interested in furthering the effort is crucial.

For instance, system engineers frequently talk with clients and other team members about system designs and development timelines.

The majority of my work is also internal, therefore throughout working hours, I am surrounded by my coworkers. Leading a good social life requires developing relationships of trust with coworkers. It is insufficient to only program.

What is EQ exactly? According to my research, EQ is made up of five components:

1. Recognize your own feelings

It’s important to be conscious of your current emotions. Humans occasionally experience unfavorable emotions. The fundamentals of EQ at that point are to openly admit, “I don’t like this right now.”

2. Maintain emotional control

It involves controlling your emotions while you’re anxious or angry. Even when they are distressed, people with superior emotional control can recover more quickly.

3. Get yourself inspired

It’s about inspiring oneself to achieve your objectives. When learning or concentrating, it is a skill that is required. You also need self-control to endure the small pleasures in front of you.

4. Recognize the Feelings of Others

It serves as the foundation for forming connections. Troublemakers are frequently those who lack the capacity for empathy or who priorities their own sentiments over those of others. Knowing that your feelings and those of others don’t always align is a positive thing.

5. Take care of your relationships

Recognize your own emotions, respect the other person’s feelings, and then carry on a dialogue based on your similarities and differences. Maintaining positive relationships and displaying leadership are essential.

Write down your emotions, have a method for calming down when your emotions become agitated, and consider other people’s perspectives in order to increase your emotional intelligence (EQ). It’s crucial to stack up steadily.
